Perusal Material

Scores and scripts as listed are available for perusal by MTNZ members. Hireage of one show for four weeks' perusal is $20.00 plus postage/courier costs (GST inclusive). Two shows cost $25, three shows $30, four shows $35 etc. Hirers are asked to ensure that perusal material is returned on time; overdue charges are $5 per show per week overdue.

Non-members of MTNZ may borrow scores and scripts, but the rates for hireage are twice those of members. Hireage of one show is therefore $35 plus courier costs, etc; overdue fees are $10 per show per week.

Requests may be made by fax (04 479-5171), letter (Box 1413, Wellington), Email (kate@musical.org.nz), or telephone (04 479-5911). Please allow up to three working days for processing (speedy processing will cost at least one chocolate fish!)

Production Material

The amount of production material on hand for hire varies. Please check with the librarian to ensure that your requirements can be met for any specific show. Part sets can occasionally be provided for a short period for audition purposes, pending arrival of scores and scripts from overseas. Orchestrations and conductors' scores do not form part of the production material available from the library.

  Orchestral Parts

Unfortunately the MTNZ library only has vocal and piano/conductor scores, we do not have orchestral parts for shows.  You will need to obtain your orchestral parts from the copyright holder who issues you with your performance licence.

 Copyright, the Law and You

The right to produce any musical is dependent upon receiving a licence from the copyright holder. The availability of amateur performing rights can be withdrawn at any time without notice. It is the responsibility of the hiring society to secure rights before making any commitment towards staging the show. If you are not sure about the copyright laws appropriate to the musical you wish to perform, check with the copyright owners before you do anything. Ensure you read your Licence Agreement carefully.  Please note that under no circumstances should material hired from the MTNZ library be used for rehearsal purposes.  This material is for perusal only.  YOU MUST OBTAIN A PERFORMANCE LICENCE FROM THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER.

   *** Remember ***
  DO :
  • Book your licence and the material you wish to hire, early (6 - 12 months ahead)

  • Provide dates of intended performances when applying for rights

  • Sign the Licensing Agreement and return together with deposit without delay

  • Clean notations made to hired material before its return

  • Pay Non-Resident Withholding Tax (10% of all royalties sent overseas) to IRD.

  DON'T :

  • Photocopy any printed material

  • Video or audio record your production

  • Produce souvenir T-shirts, mugs, etc. without a Merchandising Contract

  • Make cuts or include extra songs.

Special copyright conditions apply to songs from musical shows performed in revues and similar productions, and application for royalty details for songs used within a concert format, and for permission to use such material should be made to APRA Ltd. Application should also be made to APRA in respect of the performance of material from sources other than musical shows.

However, if using original choreography, set, props and costumes (ie I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables complete with wig and costume) within a "variety" or revue type show - this is considered grand rights and you will need to apply to the grand rights holder (not APRA).  The APRA licence DOES NOT COVER SONGS PERFORMED IN REVUES THAT USE ORIGINAL CHOREOGRAPHY, SET, PROPS AND COSTUMES - if you perform these types of shows without a grand copyright holder licence and only an APRA licence, you are breaking the copyright law and could face prosecution from the grand rights holder.

If  you wish to perform individual songs from grand right works (ie Les Mis, Miss Saigon, Superstar, Hello Dolly) as part of a “concert evening” you must follow these guidelines:

 -        No more than three songs may be used from any one show

-        Your “concert evening” must be the work of more than one composer

-        You may not recreate your own story or write your own dialogue

-        You may not use dialogue, choreography or costuming from the original show; your revue must truly be a concert with no other dramatic intent

-        The venue must have a licence from APRA (small rights)

-        Sheet music must be purchased from a third party retailer

-        Sheet music may not be photocopied.

-        Please also be aware that an APRA concert agreement does not give you permission to orchestrate or arrange a song for ensemble or choir. If you wish to orchestrate a song you must apply directly to the publisher of the song. In the instance of Leonard Bernstein works this permission will not be granted.   The majority of the standard orchestrations are available for hire from the copyright holders. eg. HLA, Origin, Allans etc. In addition, many of the Broadway choral medleys that are available for sale from your local music retailer also have authorised backing tracks.

If you wish to include ANY of the dramatic elements listed above, you MUST seek permission from the appropriate grand right holder, whether it be Hal Leonard, Origin, Dominie, Tams Witmark or any other agency.
